Spanish Florida
The first European explorers arrived in Florida in the early 16th century, claiming the territory as part of New Spain. Spanish expeditions explored the interior, mapping rivers and lakes, but permanent settlements in Bartow’s area were limited due to dense forests, swamps, and mosquito-borne diseases.
Spanish influence included the introduction of livestock, European crops, and Catholic missionary activities, though the Bartow region remained largely untouched until American settlement.
British Florida
From 1763 to 1783, Florida was under British control. Settlers experimented with agriculture, timber, and small-scale cattle ranching, but the Bartow area remained largely isolated. Only limited exploration and minor settlements occurred during this period.
American Territorial Period
Following the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1821, Florida became a U.S. territory. American settlers gradually migrated inland, establishing farms, ranches, and small communities.
